1001 novels to read before dying

How many of these have you read? I've read 55. I noticed that I often read the minor works by the same author but not the major work listed. I wonder why. I do that with plays too. I think it comes from buying used books. There should be a comparable list of plays. Anyone have time to make one? I have read many more of those. http://1morechapter.com/projects/1001-list/ h/t John August

That's an excellent list. I've read 101 of those books and will now happily start going book by book because I'm kind of a geek like that. I haven't read anything from the 1700's, however.

Though reading is great, the list is too long.

I mean, sure, I've read a lot of the book, but also I find it totally overwhelming.

I prefer Stuart Brent's 100 Books list which broke down into 10 groups - "Books to read in the Bath" and "Books to take to the picnic."

I've read 68 (plus two I never finished when I read them in middle school, namely Frankenstein and Jane Eyre).

I started ulysses and never finished. maybe someday. There are a few others like that. i stopped and started reading something else instead. There are a lot on that list that are on my shelf waiting for someday.

I've read 170 - as the good student in the front row I would like my recognition.

I got 161, which made me feel good about myself for a while even though it's a drop in the bucket. (My wife has probably read at least twice as many as I have.)

What surprised me was 1. how many books on this list are neither particularly good nor (to my mind)particularly influential; and 2. how many aren't even remotely novels to begin with.

Kris and Eric, very impressive! I've read 3 books the last 4 days but none of them were on this list. alas. once I'm writing I don't read at all.

In answer to your earlier question, Adam, there is a book out that's similar in intent (and in gimmickiness) to the one from which this list came: The Drama 100 is its title. But being only 100 titles, instead of 1001, makes it somewhat less interesting for conversational purposes--y'know, like: Have you read The Crucible? Yup. Have you read Lear? Yup. The Oresteia? And so on. Not as much room for discovery, outrage, and bragging rights?

right. so we should all make a list of our favorites and put them all together in a mega list of have you read all these?

I've read 69 but will soon be well into the 70s because I very recently discovered and fell in love with Paul Auster, who has quite a few entries.

in this list I found some of the most great works in this world, and according to my numbers, I has readed around a 72 novels, looks like that I have enough work to my future.
