Happy New Year!!

Today we went cross country skiing on and around the Lake of the Isles. This is what it looks like at night. Sometimes. I find I really enjoy self propelled motion. Next up--ice skating. Then who knows? The world is our oyster. Our very cold, icy oyster.

2008 in review

I had 6 productions of my full length plays, in '08, all from the publications. I had some short pieces go up in various places, wrote some songs for the Rapid Response Team. Two of my short plays were made into films, one of which I'll get to see next month and the other which I hope you've all seen by now. Two short plays are being published as well. I went to LA and had lots of TV meetings. I wrote and rewrote a pilot, and then threw it out and wrote it again. I pitched another pilot a couple of times which I hope to write when I get a chance. I had a commission from South Coast Rep, I had a good time reading Incendiary with Labyrinth in Vermont and New York. Hung out with Single Carrot Theatre in Baltimore who did Food For Fish. Bought long underwear and moved to Minneapolis for my wife's fellowship. Oh yeah, did I mention I got married? I got married. I've been thinking of it as a year of setting up, resting, regrouping, preparing for the real work ahead, but when I look at all those things, well, those are a lot of things. I guess that was a busy year. And more to come. Two plays for sure coming up. Two more possible and a lot of maybes in the air.

what we have in MN

A Klingon Christmas Carol -- Paul and Sheila Wellstone Center, Saint Paul, MN

Scrooge has no honor, nor any courage. Can three ghosts help him to become the true warrior he ought to be in time to save Tiny Tim from a horrible fate? Performed in the Original Klingon with English Supertitles, and narrative analysis from The Vulcan Institute of Cultural Anthropology.

The Dickens classic tale of ghosts and redemption adapted to reflect the Warrior Code of Honor and then translated into tlhIngan Hol (That's the Klingon Language).

A co-production of Commedia Beauregard and the IKV RakeHell of the Klingon Assault Group.

what's going on

So right now I'm temping at a job all day where I can't get on the internet and can only have my cell phone on during lunch and my two 15 min breaks. So I am incommunicado most of the day. and you know, it's ok so far. The other day I rode my bike home in a blizzard and then the next day rode my bike back to work in what the blizzard left behind. I wiped out a couple of times but I didn't die and in fact I kind of loved it. Biking is the form of transportation that I never knew was perfect for me. Coming up next playwise is a production of Food For Fish at Northwestern University. At the same time I'll be in new york rehearsing my new play at Juilliard. I'll be in town from Jan 19 to Feb 14. I'd love to see you all during that time. Oh and maybe you can come see the packawallop-produced short film The Moment then which stars Susan Louise O'Connor and Jeff Biehl. what else? Writing a completely different version of the pilot I was talking about. Got three plays and one pilot on the backburner all dying to get written. I like minneapolis. It's nice here. I like snow. And it hasn't gone below zero but once so far. I'll let you know how that progresses.

something new

this is the beginning of something new. It is very much a first draft. LOUISE (on the phone) Physics has a name for the things you can’t see. Elsewhere. Like if I’m transmitting something light years away, the time it’s in transmission, we lose it. During that time it’s elsewhere. It’s unknowable. My sister used to bury my favorite toys when we were kids. It took me a while to figure out what was happening. I would get a new doll and I would express my love for it and its yarn hair and it’s jagged smile and before I knew it, it was gone. When I finally figured it out, I was able to unearth some of my toys. Never the ones I wanted most, but I found a few by digging all day long, day after day in randomly chosen places. Eventually the adults got involved and my excavations were shut down. Maybe I should have become an archeologist. Are archeologists lonely? Do they stay up at night thinking about civilizations they wish they could have been a part of? You know, loneliness is the only thing I can’t get over. I accept that he’s dead. I accept that I’m terrified of leaving the house, but I can’t stand how much it hurts to be alone. It burns with lack. The emptiness. I could take all the rest if there wasn’t such an emptiness. Sometimes I order things I don’t want just so the delivery man will show up and talk to me for a minute. But he just hands me the package and leaves again. What about you? Is your job lonely? It must be nice talking to people all day. No, I know, but still. Oh, right. I’m sorry I wasn’t letting you talk. Oh, well I don’t have a car so no, I don’t need car insurance. Hello? Hello?
