Improving My State

I've convinced myself that I can make my life better with one or two simple changes. I've narrowed it down to three possibilities. A. Quit my job--I could write all day long, walk around in pajamas, watch TV, sleep when I want go to museums, be drunk all the time. Of course I won't be able to pay my rent and so I will eventually be out on the street where my hefty school debt will consume me. I'm not sure if Sallie May sends out thugs but when I'm living on the street that will be one more downside--Sallie May Thugs. OK, so maybe that won't make my life better right now. B. Become a monk--This is a lot like the previous one--except monks are probably not drunk all the time. And probably don't watch TV. And I really want the opportunity to wear robes all the time and the life of a monk sort of sounds good some of the time. But then I'd have to come down on one side or another in this god thing--very few agnostic monks I'd imagine. C. Buy moccasins--Is that all I'd need to change my life for the better? Some different footwear? But where would I find nice moccasins. Or maybe I should get cowboy boots. Where does one get the very right ones though. So you can see why my life has not improved recently. They gave me a mug and a framed certificate at work today.

I knew someone who became a monk. He told me he spent about eight hours a day walking in a circle. So that probably won't work. As for moccasins, well, winter's coming on and they're no good for NYC slush. If I were you, I'd take up a vice like recreational drug use to liven things up a bit.

Thanks, David, but me and drugs don't get along--it's the built in paranoia

Never underestimate the ability of a good cowboy boot to shake things up for the better.

I'd suggest: http://www.westernhats.com/boots.html

PS Don't ask how I know any of this.

How about just a nice pair of slippers? You know, for around the house. I'm wearing some comfy ones right now. LL Bean.

I could never get into slippers. I can't take them seriously--although I have a half hidden respect for those people who can relax enough to own slippers. (or perhaps not at all hidden.)

I got into them because my aunt is cheap and every Xmas gives me a gift certificate to LL Bean for an amount too small to buy anything--slippers are the cheapest thing...And I even have to pay extra for those. But they do rock. And my feet get sore around the house if just in socks. Bad arches or something.

they have some good items over at LL and co. I like the socks--they have something called smart wool.

Adam,
Has it come to this? Socks? Smart wool?

OK fine, here is my two cents.

I try a new hair color when a change is needed.

Ciao.

hyeah I do that...or I did. Now I shave my head.

I just bought a pair of those Merrell loafer/hiking boot hybrids and it gave me a little frission of delight. Though it's pouring at Rutgers, which I'm leaving for iin about 15 minutes, and though they're allegedly water-resistant I don't want to soak my new shoes on the first day. Hiking boots it is. I'm a regular Job, from the Bible.

Oh, and by the way, medieval monks were drunk all the time. That or caffed-up; cappucino is named after Capuchin monks. There is also a beer named after monks, lambic maybe? So what you need, my friend, is a time machine.

I guess monkery used to be more like what frats are now.
